My first encounter with Armstrong was just before the start of the final time trial at the Tour DuPont in 1991.

As an aging amateur and aspiring journalist, I immediately recognized Armstrong, already a rising star in the sport. He did not know me, yet he was instantly easy-going and talkative.

After moving to France in 1992, I followed Armstrong’s early years as a European professional closely and I got to know him well.
